East Midtown Greenway – Pedestrian Bridge Erection

Siefert Associates [SA] worked closely with GCCOM Construction Co. Inc., to provide engineered plans for the erection of a new pedestrian bridge over the FDR Highway, as part of East Midtown Greenway project in Manhattan. The bridge was assembled on a barge in Brooklyn, then towed up the East River to a position adjacent to its final location. The bridge was then lifted from the barge and set on its piers using a Weeks 533 Barge crane - which is the largest revolving floating crane on the East Coast of the United States.

SA provided engineering plans for the assembly of the bridge on the barge in Brooklyn, as well as designed a custom overhang walkway to fit the out-of-plane bridge chords, and provided engineering plans for the final erection of the bridge with the Weeks 533 Barge crane. SA created a 3D MIDAS model of the tied arch bridge during the temporary lifted condition, and designed strengthening members needed to ensure structural stability of the bridge during erection operations.
