Belden Bly Bridge Replacement
Siefert Associates, LLC was recently awarded a new scope of work from SPS New England, Inc. at their Belden Bly bridge replacement project in Lynn and Saugus, MA. This unique bascule bridge includes a counterweight box [highlighted in Figure 1] that holds steel plates, cast in place concrete and balance blocks; the total counterweight is approximately 2 million pounds. A custom shoring system is required to construct, test and adjust the precise operation of the bascule span. We embraced this challenge and quickly envisioned a shoring concept that will provide maximum efficiency during the field operations. Two pile supported and pinned shoring towers will tilt down to grade to accommodate the lowered counterweight when the bascule span is raised. Stay tuned for the results!
