Harbor Brook Overflow Culvert at Amtrak Railroad, Meriden, CT

Siefert Associates, LLC completed design of a recently awarded SOE project on a fast track for Empire Paving, Inc. The project consists of installation of a 5 ft. diameter culvert pipe under an active AMTRAK railroad by use of microtunnelling technique. Excavation of jacking pit adjacent to the railroad required SOE to support the active railroad embankment. Restricted site conditions and skew alignment of culvert required innovative design solutions. Presence of shallow rock further complicated the project with insufficient toe for sheet piles requiring design of toe support to maintain stability under the E-80 loading with impact factor.
