As part of the Niantic River Bridge replacement project, Siefert Associates, LLC played a major role in providing geotechnical engineering services for major aspects of the construction. A temporary groin structure, 200 ft. long and 50 ft. wide, was designed to be used as a working platform for Manitowoc 4100W crane and for temporary storage of construction material during offloading of barge. Design services include analysis of SKZ24 sheet piles, walers and tie-rods, recommendations for placement of in-fill material and compaction requirements to account for required equipment loads. Design services also included providing working drawings for an access ramp for the construction vehicles traveling from groin structure to barge. A drill rig platform was designed and a slope stability analysis performed for over 1000 feet of platform used by the contractor to provide access for a drill rig to install steel columns.
